This course provides you with an in-depth knowledge of taxes and tax strategies to help create a more efficient portfolio. It will also dive into bitcoin to provide students with a look at how cryptocurrencies work.

What will you learn?

Students will learn core topics in taxes including: 

  • What are taxes?
  • Different types of taxes: Progressive taxes, Income taxes, capital gains tax
  • Common and Advanced Tax Saving Strategies like the Smith Manoeuvre.
  • Understand the concepts of adjusted cost base value and book value, including how to calculate real gains.
  • Tax benefits of different investment accounts such as a TFSA and RESP.

The course will also dive into trading and investment strategies such as:

  • Different types of trades (long/short positions, limits, and stops),
  • Dividend Re-Investment Plan (DRIP)
  • Dollar Cost Averaging (DCA).

Lastly, a brief introduction to bitcoin is provided to expand students’ views on the different types of currencies available to them throughout modern finance.

    PREREQUISITE(S):  Global Finance (ENCM03) and Learn to Trade (ENCM01)

    1) Learn about the basics of taxation, how to file them, and tips on minimizing taxes with strategies like the Smith Maneuver
    2) Learn how to calculate basic and progressive taxes
    3) Understand adjusted cost base value and book value and how to calculate them
    4) Explore possibilities of different investment accounts and their benefits, such as RESP, TFSA, RRSP, and LIRA
    5) Learn about different types of trades for different situations, like long/short positions, and limit trades
    6) Learn about DRIP and Dollar Cost Averaging and its advantages when it comes to investing
    7) Learn about the different types of loans, such as mortgages, car, and education loans.
    8) Understand responsible credit card usage and the pros and cons of using a credit card
    9) Learn about interest payments and how to calculate simple and compound interest
    10) Learn the basics of bitcoin, like what it is, its importance, and the difference between bitcoin and traditional currency
